Goings On

Nobunny in their right mind should miss Nobunny this Friday, July 31 at Broken City. Over the past eight years, the Arizona-born garage rock power-pop powerhouse (Justin Champlin to his folks) has made his live shows into the stuff of legend, regularly stripping down to only a rabbit mask and his skivvies while belting out bubblegum rave-ups like Chuck Berry on speedballs. The killer bill is filled out by Lethbridge faves The Moby Dicks and Endangered Ape, so hop on down and shake your cottontail.

Like death and taxes (but a lot more rockin’), Calgary’s Lucid 44 can be counted on like clockwork to give listeners a steady stream of self-described “sad bastard death folk.” First off, catch them in a free show Thursday, July 30 on the Local 510 patio with rootsy Toronto rockers The Wooden Sky. Then, drop by The Marquee Room on Friday, July 31 for the release of their latest album, Body / Harm / Sounds.

Switching up their previous lo-fi sound for the polished but still gritty production of Lorrie Matheson, the album is the 18th self-released offering from Lucid 44 frontman Markus Overland’s D.I.Y. label Tonto is Jesus Ltd. It can be procured as a CD, or in what’s quite likely the coolest format ever — a cassette tape wrapped in a beer cozy. The lineup for the August 1 show is rounded out by metallic noise rock duo Seizure Salad and sweetie-pie pop troupe Thighs, which is also releasing a cassingle.

Finally, Saturday, August 1 also finds dance-floor-fillers Fort Knox Five spinning by the HiFi for a stop on their Radio Free DC Remixed Tour. The confusingly titled four-man crew will set up with a turntable for each member, bouncing back and forth between funk, reggae and hip hop to B-boy and girl-approved beats and breaks.
