Calgary might get loud

Power metal, rock ’n’ roll and, yes, more film fest

Before getting into the concerts for the week, it seems only appropriate to point out the Calgary International Film Festival’s Music on Film series, this being our film fest issue and all. Kicking off with guitar doc It Might Get Loud (featuring Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White) on Friday, September 25, the series also features SoCal punk doc One Nine Nine Four on September 29, the Sex Pistols-centric Who Killed Nancy on October 1 and rad-looking concert doc All Tomorrow’s Parties on October 2, which features performances from Belle and Sebastian, Slint, The Boredoms, Battles and more.

To bring it back to live music, though, the series also includes National Parks Project: Gros Morne, a 43-minute look at Newfoundland’s Gros Morne National Park, with a live soundtrack from Morgan Greenwood of Azeda Booth, Myke Atkinson of Beneath These Idle Tides, Scott Munro of Gunther and the Bent Spoon Ensemble, and Jay Crocker. That’s a pretty stacked lineup, so don’t miss the one-off performance on Saturday, September 26.

Outside of film fest, there’s still plenty going on. Thursday, September 24 sees the triumphant return of power metal heroes Dragonforce, who’ll share a stage at MacEwan Hall with Finnish powerhouse Sonata Arctica. Both are pretty ridiculous, to be honest, but if you’re willing to embrace the cheese, it’ll be a hell of a show. If that sounds a little overly bombastic, the Ironwood will be hosting a considerably lower-key show that same night with cinematic folkie Wendy McNeil and Calgary’s top storytelling troubadour, Kris Demeanor.

If you missed The Hold Steady last week and you’re craving some Springsteen-inspired rock, there’s always The Gaslight Anthem, playing Mac Hall on Sunday, September 27 with Murder By Death, Loved Ones and Frank Turner. The Springsteen comparison isn’t meant to be dismissive, by the way — it’s an obvious influence, but the band has more than enough energy and hooks to stand on its own.

Rounding things off, Tuesday, September 29 will see Deadmau5 spinning at Flames Central. Ranked the 14th best DJ in the world on thedjlist.com (for those who put stock in such things), he’ll be playing a typically genre-defying set. Oh, and for the record, the No. 1 DJ on the list? Tiesto, who’ll be headed back to Calgary this November.
