Goings On

Wolf Parade devotees can be worse than Twilight fans. Indeed, Team Krug’s message board fanatics were plenty pleased to see Sunset Rubdown — Spencer’s side project — visit Calgary last year, but where does that leave Team Boeckner? Does guitarist Dante DeCaro even have a team? Who’s that dude with the moustache, anyhow?

So many questions, and B.C.’s finest export will attempt to answer ’em all when they play the Republik on Thursday, July 22. It’ll be Krug and Boeckner’s first Calgary appearance together in nearly four years, and their first since touring in support of their debut, Apologies to the Queen Mary. And yes, expect to hear “This Heart’s on Fire.” If you plan on going, give the moustache dude — his friends call him Arlen Thomson — a hug. He deserves it.

For the weekend, there’s plenty happening at the Calgary Folk Music Festival. But then again, if things woodsy, rootsy or indie (yeah, I said it) don’t boat your float, stay calm: there are alternatives, and Drake, who plays at the Big Four Building on the Stampede Grounds on Sunday, July 25, is a start. Known for his soulful introspection, sweaty summer anthems and me-first rhymes, he’s built a solid mainstream following that has him rubbing shoulders with Kanye and Lil’ Weezy. Not too shabby for a kid from Toronto’s midtown.

And if you’ve had your fill of guitar-driven rock, head on over to Broken City on Wednesday, July 28 to catch Kelowna’s We Are the City. It’s a piano-pop trio, but if you’re thinking Ben Folds, think again. Yes, it’s no stranger to major-key anthems, but don’t be surprised to see this energetic threesome boldly wander into proggy and post-rock territories, as well. Vancouver indie-pop charmers Said the Whale and tour mate Aidan Knight round out the bill.

Lastly, Natural Born Killers fans rejoice! Its twisted female protagonist, Juliette Lewis, is rolling into town, though she has likely traded in her crusty pastel-pink convertible for a shiny tour bus. She’ll be performing at Republik on Thursday, July 29 with her new backing band, The New Romantiques, performing cuts from her Omar Rodriguez-Lopes (Mars Volta) produced LP, Terra Incognita. Just don’t expect Woody to show up — he’s probably greened out on a couch somewhere.
