Even with Z-Trip’s mad skills on the deck, when I heard that his new album was the soundtrack to a video game that teamed him up with such sketchy rock acts as Chevelle and The Deftones, I was skeptical. But what could have been a new millennium re-rub of the Judgment Night soundtrack is actually an impressive slice of hip hop. Mixing mash-ups with great rhymes from such guests as Jurassic Five’s Chali 2Na, Aceyalone and Gift of Gab, All Pro 2K8 actually sounds like an album and not video game fodder. There are still high-octane guitar riffs that are a pre-req for extreme joystick play, but Z-Trip blends it so well that even with the lousy re-mix of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” that closes the album, the DJ never gets sacked.
