Woodhands - Remorsecapade

Paper Bag Records

There’s a lot swirling around the mix on Remorsecapade, the new record from Vancouver electro-pop duo Woodhands, but it all comes from the same initial itch: Dan Werb and Paul Banwatt are directly channelling their inner teenager. Take a song like “Cp24,” wherein Werb sing-yells that he’s outside, “pointing 1,600 Roman candles at your door.” There’s something wonderfully obsessive and at the same time naive about that image: You can imagine a kid in high school, spurned by his crush, getting so riled up and lovesick that he comes up with this, the craziest plan possible, to win her back.

The rest of Remorsecapade follows this basic template, with electronic squiggles and skittery, dance-oriented drums providing the soundtrack to Werb’s passionate but extremely rough vocals. It’s all fun, even if there isn’t much replay value. And a couple of more reflective songs about coming down (“I Should Have Gone With My Friends,” “When the Party is Over”) show the duo may have more cards up its sleeve yet.
