Wolvengard’s impressive debut, The Beckoning Darkness, displays the impressive chops of the ensemble (featuring members of Destiny Calling and REAL) to good effect. Balancing bludgeoning explosions of sonic fury with an impressive sense of timing and calculated restraint, the Calgary-based outfit’s multiple guitar-wielding members leave each other plenty of room to manoeuvre through the album’s nine hair-raising cuts. Power and poetry walk hand in hand as melodic neoclassical trappings lay the foundations for towering prog-rock on devastating epics such as “Ground Zero,” the dynamic yet benevolent “Live Another Day” and the precisely punitive “Trashing Hell.”
