We Are the City - In A Quiet World

Independent

Listening to the debut from We Are the City, you’d never guess it came from Kelowna. It’s not that the Okanagan has a particular sound, but rather that the band’s melodic indie rock belies the size of its hometown. With cascading guitars, heavily orchestrated arrangements and longing vocals from Cayne McKenzie, the band could easily fit on the Arts & Crafts roster — it just has a bit of growing to do before it gets there. There’s a wide-open musical attitude on In a Quiet World that is rich, earnest and refreshing, but there are moments when the immaturity of the lyrics derails the epic sophistication of the instrumentation. That said, if McKenzie comes to the realization that less is more, the followup will be nothing short of astonishing.
