It took a couple of years, some bad reunion tours and thrash-jokesters Municipal Waste’s antics, but it would appear that thrash metal has finally regained its soul. Bursting forth with the tinny production levels, relentless scissor-kick drumming and grunting vocal delivery that characterizes the finest output by Exodus, Possessed and Testament, Warbringer’s debut album War Without End (nicked from Metallica’s “No Remorse,” no doubt) isn’t revisiting the past so much as it is the past. Songs like “Dread Command,” “Hell on Earth” and “Shoot to Kill” reek of denim vests over leather jackets, white high-top sneakers and Old Milwaukee. It’s as brilliant as it is derivative. However, while War Without End is fucking incredible, especially for a group of metallions younger than Seasons in the Abyss, the overt lack of humour on the record can be daunting. Even when delivering their most politically driven opinions, thrashers like Nuclear Assault threw in something amusing to cut the tension. Once Warbringer picks up on that crucial element, there could very well be no stopping this branch of the new wave of American thrash metal.
