During the summer of 2008, engineer Mike Petkau invited an array of Winnipeg musicians to a weekly recording session. Nobody knew who was showing up, but they did realize that they were going to write and record a song together. Admittedly, this kind of experiment could have inconsistent results, but the 16 tracks compiled here are more hit than miss. This has a lot to do with the genre-smashing confluence of musicians. “Falling” features a member of roots ensemble Nathan with a jazz sax player. The vocalist from punk outfit Anthem Red shares “All Answers Pending” with a banjo-wielding growler from the D-Rangers. On the compilation’s most successful track, “Keewatin Arctic,” The Weakerthans’ John K. Sampson is backed up by an Inuit throat singer and the low-key glitch of Blunderspublik. Usually, geographically based compilations paint a picture of the scene as it stands. What sets Record of the Week Club apart is the way it showcases not only the talent of Winnipeg musicians, but their potential as well.
