The newest vinyl offering from Calgary’s Revolution Winter label, Future Confusion features six quick and memorable songs from Toronto’s Town Ship (formerly known as Ancestors). Town Ship hit all of the things I like about post-hardcore while avoiding everything I dislike — Future Confusion is brash, noisy and energetic, but it also avoids the one huge pitfall that ruins so many of these bands: there’s no cheesed-out heaviness. No chugga chugga, no tough-guy bullshit, no moronic breakdowns, just burly rock energy that only lets up when it’s time to flip the record.
The whole EP is incendiary, though I do have a few favourite moments: “Real Numbers” has the most simultaneously gross and excellent guitar break, and “International Harvester,” the longest song on here by a full minute, merges aggressive punk drive with dissonant chording and feedback trails. Town Ship’s dual-guitar approach reminds me of Drive Like Jehu, but in a more compact form. Nothing here overstays its welcome, leaving a trim, six-song EP that gets straight to the point. Grab this.
