Mix Benjamin Britten, Charles Bukowski and free improvisation, and you might just get the newest jazz CD from the Tony Wilson Sextet. This newest offering from Wilson, The People Look Like Flowers At Last, is a dynamic combination of classical and jazz music. The sextet’s second CD after the critically acclaimed 2001 release of Lowest Note, the album is named after a Charles Bukowski poem and, fittingly, it’s a ride of dissonance and beauty. It's an intense, layered exploration of a Benjamin Britten composition and a handful of strong original compositions from Wilson. Backed by sextet members Peggy Lee, Dave Say, Kevin Elaschuk, Paul Blaney and Dylan Van Der Schyff, this CD features the best in the Vancouver music scene — and it doesn’t disappoint.
