This City Defects - Two Form Constant

Independent

The surreal, Salvador Dali-esque illustration on the back of This City Defects’ debut album says it all: This music sounds like a giant crow with a camera in its mouth hanging out with a six-legged contortionist. The latest offering from members of Calgary’s now-defunct jazz-punk unit Lint, Two Form Constant is abstract, emotional and aggressively technical without indulging in (too much) wankiness.

Though the album’s primary tone is dreamy and atmospheric, the group slices through the gauze with dissonance and driving rockers such as “Ersatz” and “Apex of the Tongue.” Unfortunately, singer Josh Wong’s overwrought vocal delivery becomes a little tiresome after a few songs, but the group has still calculated some mystifying musical mathematics.
