Think About Life - Family

Alien8

In the first few moments of their sophomore effort, it’s already obvious that Think About Life have struck an exciting new course. Unlike their rather forgettable self-titled debut, Family crashes headlong into an unabashed dance party and delivers 10 lean-cut electro-funk jams without coming up for air. The new formula hits a delightful sweet spot on the indie spectrum, like if Gnarls Barkley weren’t so squeaky clean or if the TV on the Radio guys didn’t take themselves so seriously.

Driven by the swagger of vocalist Martin Cesar, standout tracks like “Johanna” and “Young Hearts” also benefit greatly from solid musical underpinnings provided by Matt Shane on drums and the masterful Graham Van Pelt on everything else. In the time between Think About Life’s self-titled debut and Family, Van Pelt earned widespread acclaim for his Polaris Music Prize-nominated Miracle Fortress project, and his fingerprints are all over Family, which applies the same lush synthesizer work and top-notch production in a different but equally awesome setting.

By the sounds of it, the newly recast Think About Life is all about having fun, for listeners and performers alike. From the curious spoken word incantation that segues into “Wizzzard” to the cheeky cut “The Veldt,” which lifts a hook from the Temptations’ classic “My Girl,” the lyrical themes are as fast and loose as the tunes, making for an album that absolutely begs to be blared at top volume on a hot summer day.
