Originally more a singer-songwriter with backing musicians than a fully functional band, New York's The Weight have become a true unit on Are Men. Even the album title seems to speak to main man Joseph Plunket accepting his fellow musicians as equals, and this shift speaks volumes for the overall impact of their work. Taking greater pride in their output, the band's drawling alt-country (infused with gracious sprinklings of folk and rock as interpreted by former punk kids) shines bold and bright. Nestled in a relaxed, subtle twang, the affair is equivalent to the loose, fall-apart-at-any-minute ethos perfected by acts such as The Band. Fresh, inspired and enigmatic while still maintaining a comfortably familiar feel, the album's 10 tracks breeze by with an infectious listlessness that elicits emotional pangs for the salad days of carefree summertime. Are Men’s lush choruses and occasional bursts of rowdiness make The Weight an effortless burden.
