The Slew’s debut album, 100%, sounds exactly like what you’d expect from a collaboration between turntablist Kid Koala, the former rhythm section of Australian classic rock revivalists Wolfmother and a guy who calls himself Dymond Dynomite D. That is, big, dumb rawk riffage with DJ scratches awkwardly stapled on top.
As is so often the case when artists try to stir hip hop ingredients into rock foundations, 100% comes across as muddled and unnecessary; neither a good slice of ’70s inspired rock nor a particularly strong showcase of Koala’s skills behind the decks. The vocals only compound matters, revelling in dopey rock ’n’ roll clichés in an irritating and flat guttural wail. The combination of beefy riffing, thundering bass and squiggly scratches does achieve a stoner appeal at times, but even the most blunted will grow tired of The Slew’s one-trick circus quickly.
It’s understandable that Kid Koala would want to branch out and try something new, but if 100% is any indication, the sooner he gets back to his comfort zone the better.
