There’s a delicate balance at work in the songs of Edmonton’s The Provincial Archives. It’s not just in the combination of chamber pop and alt folk — those two styles interlock pretty well, as illustrated by the hypnotic banjo playing and low-key glitch on album opener “Weight and Sea.” It’s in the lyrics, too. Smart without being too clever, intimate yet totally universal and disarmingly earnest, singer Craig Schram paints thoughtful portraits of the human experience. It’s a wistful collection of 10 songs that embraces its melancholy side without ever abandoning optimism. There is a reverential attention to detail in every spun phrase and finger-plucked note that commands attention and demands repeat listening. Equal parts metaphor and melody, Maybe We Could Be Holy is nothing short of stunning.
