The Minus Five - Killingsworth

Yep Roc

With an eternally rotating lineup and ever-evolving style, you can usually count on The Minus Five to help remind you why you liked rock ’n’ roll in the first place. Maybe frontman Scott McCaughey is running out of steam or maybe his band of backing musicians, culled from Portland, Oregon’s fertile music scene, weren’t feeling the vibe. For whatever reason, even though Killingsworth is a technically competent record, it’s also dull as can be. Beatles-influenced pop numbers plod along without resolve, while easygoing melodies that sound like B-sides from The Eagles hold even less promise. With its bland alt-country tendencies and soulless vocal melodies, this album is perfect for putting on and ignoring, but that’s hardly why you buy a record these days. Perhaps your money would be better spent on the latest Young Fresh Fellows album. McCaughey plays in that band, too, and it was released the same day.
