It isn’t often that you get an indie band willing to show off their inner jock, but that’s exactly what you’ll find on “Peyton and Perry,” the fourth track on The Got To Get Got’s new album, Sahalee. References to Peyton and Eli Manning, Terry Bradshaw and Lynn Swann, even some sports metaphors (“It feels like we’re moving the chains!”) might give you the impression that you’re in for a unique experience. But you’re not.
Unfortunately, other than the odd and enjoyable step out of line, TGTGG toe the indie line pretty faithfully here. Speedy, non-syncopated guitar riffs, gang vocals and cutesy instrumental fills rule the day, which is somewhat surprising considering how clever Mark Mullane is lyrically and how quick he is to throw indie rock under the bus — there’s a song here called “Some Loud Thunder Clap Your Hands Say Boom.” But those aforementioned gang vocals are quirky in a way that is all too quickly becoming familiar (“B-b-b-b-battle lines!”) and what was once invigorating is already begging for reinvention.
All of the necessary elements for musical greatness are here and are ready to be mined. It feels like the band is just a step or two away from doing something really special.
