With Two Hours Traffic’s Alec O’Hanley and Andrew McDonald splitting their time to write and record with The Danks, it’s no surprise that both bands share a love of up-tempo, hook-heavy pop. Even if The Danks were nothing but a carbon copy of Two Hours Traffic, the result would still be pretty fantastic. However, a few listens to Are You Afraid of the Danks? shows more than a few subtle differences that set this band apart. There’s a no-bullshit simplicity here that’s as refreshing as it is fun. With songs stripped down to the most immediate essentials, the vocals get a chance to breathe and all the instruments come through with crisp clarity. McDonald’s bass lines are given considerably more respect in this outfit and he makes the most of it with propulsive runs that anchor the album. O’Hanley’s new-wave keyboard adds a retro flair, but The Danks are straight-up power pop at heart and there’s simply no denying their power.
