• Like a zombie pin-up girl. The Creepshow is pretty scary.
Back for another kick at the black cat, this Ontario four-piece’s sophomore effort, Run for Your Life is easily as solid and surprising as their 2006 full-length debut, Sell Your Soul. You’d have to possess a remarkably fine-tuned ear to discern that psychobilly diva Jen “Hellcat” Blackwood has been replaced by her sister Sarah “Sin” Blackwood. Perhaps a little less striking than her sister’s bold intonations, Sarah’s vocals are smooth but sassy, adding venom to tracks like “Demon Lover” and “You’ll Come Crawlin’.” She’s no one-trick singer, though, and waxes sentimental on “Long Way Down.”
As an admittedly temporary replacement for her sister, who’s on maternity leave thanks to Hooch of The Matadors, Sin is faced with the challenge of preserving the band’s original hellbilly essence while contributing her own unique talents to the collective. A well-crafted and ridiculously fun romp through the graveyard, Run For Your Life confirms her worthiness as a surrogate singer-guitarist. The blond bombshell’s need for speed has left a definite mark on the rest of the band, as they tear through ’50s inspired three-chord punk tunes like zombies at a MENSA meeting.
