The Bronx - The Bronx (III)

Distort/White Drugs

The Bronx are all business, not even slowing down enough to decorate their third album with a superfluous title. When the crunchy opening chords of "Knifeman" spiral into the refrain, it demonstrates the band's emergence from hardcore's murkier sludge. Matt Caughthran's vocals burn as he sings "They're rioting in the street because there's not enough money to go around," invoking the spirit of MC5 vocalist Rob Tyner to bring a bit of Motor City madness and muscle to the L.A. music scene. The roaring guitar work of Joby Ford and Ken Mochicoshi shows new depth, continuing its blistering pace and rendering The Bronx gloriously unrepentant on songs like "Pleasure Seekers," with its call to "live a little," or the searing "Digital Leaves." If the new Eagles of Death Metal leaves you cold, this is your answer.
