Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers are one of those bands people know more for their carnivalesque atmosphere and general mayhem than for their music. Hopefully the Bayou-on-acid atmosphere of Swampblood will alter this forever. While the band is still steeped in traditional rockabilly cavorting with religious (in a voodoo sense) overtones, boozy rock ’n’ roll and juke-joint blues as played by a jug band, Swampblood steps back from the over-the-top circus sideshow feel of previous efforts and actually produces some toe-tapping, listenable and enjoyable tunes. Haunting yet enticing and rockin’ without the use of typical 4/4 beats and three-chord anthems, Swampblood is as weird as it is wicked, as slick as it is sinister and sensational.
