• Toronto's Sunparlour Players resemble a more endearing Dears.
There is a certain Canadiana feel to the Sunparlour Players second LP, Wave North, and this is no bad thing. Recorded in Blue Rodeo’s home studio, the album is filled with sounds culled from the heyday of Canada’s country-rock legends, but injected with a mature, fluid sheen.
As such, a disorganized feel dominates the album, but does so fluidly, as if the songs are guiding themselves through pastoral settings frequented by pop, rock, folk and blues. In addition, the vocals — somewhat fragile and down-tempo — reflect a band just coming into its own, yet simultaneously sounding extremely confident in embracing the process. And it’s just serene — an ebullient and enigmatic album.
