Strike Anywhere once again blows up the scene with incendiary fury. The band’s latest, Iron Front, has a distinctly militaristic tone to it. Polished poli-punk anthems “Invisible Colony,” “I’m Your Opposite Number” and “The Crossing” seem overly concerned with flags, states, change and chaos. Strike Anywhere’s big riff So-Cal sound, with its surging Van’s Warped Tour heartbeat and cresting melodies, sparkles in contrast to the gritty old-school rage and vehemence with which the band spits its brave words.
Occasionally venturing into Sum 41 territory, the Virginians pull ahead of the MuchMusic crowd by virtue of speed alone. The three-year breaks between albums (the last being 2006’s Dead FM) has proven to be a winning formula for the quixotic quintet, which has packed some 13 tracks into this audio hand grenade. More fun than a match head sandwich.
