Soulfly - Omen

Roadrunner

Count your lucky stars, rhythmic metal fans. It appears as if the brilliance and aggression of Soulfly's 2008 opus Conquer wasn't an anomaly. Despite being one of the genre's most notable names, Soulfly hasn't exactly been prone to creating successively superior albums. After a strong start some 13 years ago, the band quickly became mired in the same muddy metal it helped create.

When mainstay Max Cavalera reunited with his brother Igor after their much-publicized parting of ways circa 1996, the end results — both Cavalera Conspiracy and Conquer — revealed a reinvigorated and explosive guitarist-vocalist. Continuing in the tradition of its predecessor, Omen is another solid blast of forthright, demonic and guttural metal with intimations of both progressive and monolithic rock. While the band occasionally becomes a bit too wrapped up in noodling (most notably on “Rise of the Fallen” with guest vocalist Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan), the majority of Omen simply shreds. Angry, vicious and combative while still energized and inspiring, Omen proves there is still a lot of passion, power and poignancy in the beast that is Soulfly.
