Is Snoop Dogg a fan of psychedelic animator Vince Collins? With the rapper’s recent team-ups with PFFR, creators of Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel and the short-lived Doggy Fizzy Televizzle, one shouldn’t put it past him, yet it’s more likely completely coincidental that this album shares a title with Collins’s landmark 1982 short. The other difference? Snoop’s Malice is as phoned-in as a Jerry Lewis telethon.
Over 14 songs, the dee-oh-double-gee dabbles in crunk (“1-800” ft. Lil Jon), auto-tuned club rap (“Pronto” ft. Soulja Boy) and laid-back loverman R&B (“Pimpin’ Ain’t EZ” ft. R. Kelly and “Special” ft. Brandy and Pharell). Basically, it’s all boilerplate, with a few exceptions: The catchy shouted hook of “That’s tha Homie,” surprising reworking of The Romantics’ “Talking in Your Sleep” (“Secrets” ft. Kokane) and Soulja Boy’s ridiculous rhyming of “iTunes” with “swine flu.”
