Small Sins - Pot Calls Kettle Black

Thomas D'Arcy Music

Under orders from frontman Thomas D’Arcy, Small Sins (formerly The Ladies and Gentlemen) has never fully delivered on its synth-pop promise. Now, with the help of Chicago post-rock and producing legend John McEntire, the band has made the breakout record that’s always eluded them.

Standout track “Déjà Vu” offers an unflinching cascade of retro, but lyrically (with the help of guest star K-os) Small Sins winkingly acknowledges that just maybe this ’80s revival has gone far enough. The rest of the album finds the band stretching to include low-key indie laments, feel-good rockers and even straight-up pop. With fat synth and bass tones dominating the low-end and a slightly crispy drum sound, Pot Calls Kettle Black offers a welcome nod to The Flaming Lips. With a credible hi-fi treatment and an evolving songwriting style, Small Sins has finally stepped up to the plate.
