Slow Down, Molasses - I'm an Old Believer

Little Pictures

Slow Down, Molasses started as a small, independent project smack in the middle of the Prairies, and has since expanded to list as many as nine full-time members. Songs that began as sparse, dust-covered arrangements end up as full-fledged, lush indie-folk on their debut album, I’m an Old Believer.

Some songs, like “Leaves and Lay” and “Hazy Summer Days,” earn the band their name with their lethargic pace, but for each of these, there’s an upstart like the motoring “Fucking Up.” The band draws considerable influence from Neil Young of all eras, but despite the high calibre of the acts they borrow from, they never seem to be in over their heads. The only hurdle Slow Down, Molasses faces is the paper-thin vocals of Tyson McShane, but even these aren’t a drawback, because he never reaches beyond his capabilities.

Add Saskatoon to the growing list of Canadian cities to watch for independent music.
