Very few bands create off-shoots that are as popular — or more so — than their main projects. Such is the case with Tampa, Florida death metal outfit Six Feet Under (SFU). Revered for turning the otherwise straightforward scene into something with a bit more groove, thanks to patient tempos and sinewy riffs, efforts such as Maximum Violence and Bringer of Blood are endlessly engaging. However, it's the band's casual cover albums that are the true gems in a sea of brimstone and gore.
Now hitting its third instalment, Graveyard Classics boasts nothing less than some of the finest rock and metal tunes hammered into the SFU style. This time around, the band tackles its more obvious influences, relishing the slick riffs of Metallica's “Harvester of Sorrow,” Slayer's “At Dawn They Sleep” and Exciter's “Pounding Metal” while expanding its horizons via a stab at Twisted Sister's rockin' “Destroyer,” Van Halen's “On Fire” and even The Ramones' “Psychotherapy.” Naturally, the results range from incredible to inexcusable, but virtually everyone should be able to find a tune to sing along to — a feat otherwise unheard of with SFU or any other death metal, band for that matter. Yes, tracks are occasionally more amusing than outright great, but all in all, Graveyard Classics III is still one hell of a fun time.
