PS I Love You - Meet Me At the Muster Station

Paper Bag Records

Shimmering with saturated guitar tones and buzzing with distorted vocals barely crawling out of the mix, PS I Love You is clearly ready to bring back the rock. Not in that brainless three-chord, riff-heavy way, though.

Rather, this Kingston, Ont. twosome achieves it with equal parts thoughtful savvy and hipster swagger. Sure, songs like the album’s title track don’t shy away from shameless solos, but the band isn’t afraid to take its time either. One minute, the duo sounds like shoe-gazing labelmates Uncut, but next, they bust out a synth-heavy four-on-the-floor dance track. The rest of the time, this sounds like equal parts Sonic Youth and Kings of Leon, and while such a comment sounds clichéd, the music never is.

Despite how perfect Meet Me at the Muster Station’s chugging chords and wide-open cymbals sound, the best part of the album is Paul Saulnier’s trembling squeal — he attacks every song like he’s battling with the mic. And damn it, if that bastard doesn’t win every time.
