Toronto’s Picastro makes melancholy masterpieces from weeping cello laments, echo-laden piano clanking and soft guitar picking. The group melds these elements into a decidedly beautiful yet glum esthetic on their latest effort, Become Secret, a mix that proves infectious regardless of your mood.
The track “Split Head” works as a perfect specimen of Picastro’s formula, kicking off with a stumbling guitar riff providing the basis to a grey autumn afternoon of a cello melody. Liz Hysen’s talk-singing weaves into the mix while robotic pings, distorted guitar wails and electric organ endearingly top it all off.
Listening to Become Secret makes one realize that feeling grim can be beautiful, as long as there’s a sorrowful soundtrack playing along.
