Paria claims to be a “musical experiment” whereby each musician focuses on their individual impact and intention as opposed to contributing to the overall effect. In other words, the parts are greater than the whole, but in turn, the whole becomes unique and of value. It's a great concept, but, then again, so is the word “band” meaning a group of individuals coming together under a unified goal. When that goal is so open and scattered as to result in obtuse aggressive music that barely adheres to the grey matter, the point is lost. Sure, each muscian is creative and proficient, but this muddy mixture of thrash, death and power metal is so convoluted it makes VoiVod’s artiest moments seem straightforward. The band's attempt at creating a self-proclaimed “sonic experiment with no hypothesis; a cohesive cadre” is confusing and off-putting. Disjointed songs range from one to 10 minutes yet still say absolutely nothing other than, “Isn’t this loud?” and “Isn’t this weird?” Gilbert Gottfried was both of those things, and where is he now?
