Of all the bands to come out of Winnipeg in the last decade, it’s hard to believe that Paper Moon would be one of the few with longevity. They release records at a glacial pace, their Brit-pop inspired delivery always seemed dated, and some find Allison Shevernova’s sweet, sweet vocals too syrupy. They should have put out two albums, broken up and started solo projects. Luckily they didn’t.
Only During Thunderstorms unrolls with the kind of confidence that only comes after years of playing together. The songwriting is crisp, the instrumentation is lush and the production shimmers with a hi-fi lustre that was missing from the band’s first two albums. “What Are You Going to Do With Me” is the album’s standout, propelled by disco high-hat and retro-future keyboard riffs, but the rest of the album is almost as solid. It’s rich, full and surprisingly assertive and Paper Moon transcend their piano-pop roots with some well-deserved tension.
