Oxford Collapse - Bits

Sub Pop

Oxford Collapse isn’t generally listed among the bands responsible for Sub Pop’s resurgence over the last few years, but Bits should change some minds. The Brooklyn-based trio see things a bit differently than they did on 2006’s Remember the Night Parties, where they yelped and twitched along to indie-rock standards. Bits finds them with a much more focused sound, fusing elements of punk and ’80s college rock into an album that is blistering in its speed, joyous in its singalong choruses and consistently unpredictable.

This newfound energy is most apparent on “For the Winter Coats” and “Back of the Yards,” both rave-ups that conjure memories of R.E.M.’s best. “A Wedding” steps furthest outside their new mantra — a cello and violin piece interesting enough not to halt Bits’ momentum. The album’s final two songs, “B-Roll” and “I Hate Nobody,” both build and build to climaxes that never come. Some would find this unsatisfying, but for Oxford Collapse it’s the inevitable and sudden end to the debauchery that precedes it.
