Chris “Old Man” Luedecke is a folk revivalist in the purest form. His songs are laced with a sincere form of simplicity — see “Machu Picchu,” which starts with the lyric, “I was climbing the stairs at Machu Picchu” — but it never comes across as ridiculous or insulting. Like Corb Lund before him, Luedecke has simply latched on to an abandoned niche and made it his own. And he’s quickly becoming another “next big thing” from Nova Scotia.
Still, while the album starts charmingly enough, it can’t quite sustain interest all the way through. Luedecke is a treat to listen to in short bursts — and he’s a favourite of CBC Radio 2 and 3 — but an album’s worth of his stuff might leave you tapped out.
