NOFX’s latest offering, Coaster, has nothing to do with fun parks or carnival rides. In fact, the biggest thrills on Coaster come not from the requisite highs and lows that delineate punk rock in extremis but rather the humour and honesty with which the band treats its subject matter. Shedding any pretense of youthful innocence right from the start with the acerbic opener “We Called It America,” Coaster presents a more refined version of the fun-loving band with a socio-political conscience. No longer satisfied to bank on their legendary status, the seminal punk troupe reaffirms their rejection of the establishment and authority in all its forms. Even fellow musical icons such as Iron Maiden feel the band’s ire as Eric Melvin and company take them to task on the homoerotically charged “Eddie, Bruce and Paul.” Lesser known acts aren’t immune to the mirror NOFX holds up to society, either, as Tegan’s twin sister is singled out for the snort- inducing lesbian shakedown “Creeping Out Sara.” The disc may double as a coaster, but NOFX definitely aren’t coasting.
