Over the course of two discs and 49 songs, Quiet Please follows Nick Lowe’s three-decade career and reiterates what Lowe’s loyal fans already know: this man is one hell of a songwriter. The comp focuses on Lowe’s gentler side, from ’70s new wave classics like “So It Goes” and “Cruel to be Kind” to Lowe’s ongoing interest in country rock. Lowe’s rock ’n’ roll leanings make a brief appearance, notably with the obligatory inclusion of one of his biggest hits (and worst songs), “I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock and Roll).”
To justify the “new” in the album’s title, much focus is happily given to the second act of Lowe’s career — the more “mature” singer-songwriter albums, beginning with 1994’s Impossible Bird. Listening to his newer songs alongside the golden oldies is a testament to his genius and ability to evolve. For fans of the old or the new, or for Lowe newbies who want to get their first taste, Quiet Please is a great way to get to know this often overlooked artist.
