Laying it on the line for its incendiary debut, New Jersey’s Mutiny Within is bound and determined to set up residence in the timeless realm of metaldom. Indeed, the emerging ensemble demonstrates considerable technical skills, with inspiration from some strong prog and black metal mainstays like Dream Theatre, Symphony X, Soilwork and Children of Bodom. Orchestral melodies furnished by keyboardist Andy Stavola swell and capitulate with tidal regularity underpinned by British recruit Chris Clancy’s surprisingly clean-cut vocals. At home shredding through emotive cuts like “Awake,” “Year of Affliction” and “Oblivion,” the six-man crew is equally comfortable blissing out on sensory overload for the chunky mathematics of “Images.” Mutiny Within manages to be extreme and powerful, but without the prerequisite, superfluous trappings of equally extreme hair and makeup.
