Murderdolls - Women And Children Last

Roadrunner

Almost a decade after its debut, Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls, this side-joint by Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison and partner-in-crime Wednesday 13 has finally pulled itself together for another round. Its sophomore outing festers in the same aural vein as its predecessor; Women and Children has industrial-tinged cock-rock slap-fighting with punk, resulting in a unique Mötley Cröe-meets-Misfits interplay.

All in all, while the adage “better late than never” comes to mind — mostly, thanks to the album’s amusing blasts of edgy, tongue-in-cheek gruesomeness, gritty melodies and sharp guitar lines, especially evident on creepy opener “Chapel of Blood” and “Summertime Suicide.” There’s little overall advancement here, especially given the huge swath of time between albums. While that’s advantageous for some acts, consider this: The Dolls’ last album was released when Marilyn Manson was still provocative. Times have changed.

Regardless, the duo has put plenty of effort to create interesting arrangements and pristine documentation; this release is a rousingly poppy affair maintaining the anticipated Murderdolls kitsch. Women And Children isn't an oasis in the cock-rock desert or full of glam-goth epiphanies, but it's certainly a fun diversion from Jordison and 13’s day gigs.
