Trent Reznor’s new dance album, Strobe Light, turned out to be a clever tongue-in-cheek April Fool’s gag, but had it been real, it would have sounded just like MSTRKRFT’s Fist of God. Cascading electronic beats keep the non-stop party machine a-pumpin’ from the get-go, with the tantalizing opener “It Ain’t Love” featuring Lil’ Mo doing her meanest Donna Summer impression. The Torontonians’ disco inferno rages on through synth-tastic instrumentals like “1,000 Cigarettes,” “Vuvuvu” and a hyperactive number called “Bounce” with guests N.O.R.E. and Isis. Similarly, John Legend leaves his mark on the track “Heartbreaker,” a throbbing Pet Shop Boys homage straight out of the ’80s that runs head-on into an Usher-worthy title cut you could land a UFO to. If the mad geniuses behind MSTRKRFT, Jesse F. Keeler and Alex (Al-P) Puodziukas, are to be believed, “flashcore” is definitely the next big thing.
