It’s been 12 years since Morcheeba appeared on the trip hop scene with Who Can You Trust, brandishing its smoky, sexy, swaggering style that never quite seemed to gel. Dive Deep just makes things more awkward. When they still featured Skye Edwards’s sultry vocals, Morcheeba could hold their own with a sound that wasn’t as aggressive or threatening as Massive Attack and Tricky, nor as emotionally tense and brooding as Portishead. From their second album on, the band brought a bit of light to an otherwise dark soundscape. However, since Edwards’s departure in 2003, the band has struggled to maintain an identity, proving that Morcheeba masterminds the Godfrey Brothers’ were right when they described Edwards as their muse in early interviews. Dive Deep finds Morcheeba hosting a range of vocalists and running a stylistic gamut that never seems to gain traction.
