The new album by MGMT is, simply put, just OK. Oracular Spectacular bobs through a mishmash of disparate styles of pop without any sense of order — you could throw the disc on random and come out with a more coherent album. However, if you remove the tracks on Orcular Spectacular from their context and listen to the songs individually, the whole album is suddenly brimming with gold. Taken On their own, the jangly guitars and verbed-out vocals on “Pieces Of What” make you feel like you’re listening to some forgotten ’60s pop gem, while the Bee Gees-inspired disco rock of “Electric Feel” will keep your next dance party hopping until five in the morning and get everyone stripped down to their underwear. Having trouble finding the perfect soundtrack to driving through fields of sunflowers in a convertible with the top down? Pop on “Weekend Wars.” The songs on Oracular Spectacular might not add up to some greater whole, but as singles, they couldn’t be any better.
