When you've been named by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest women of rock ’n’ roll and hailed as one of the 100 greatest singers of all time, that experience shows. Mavis Staples, with more than 60 years as a singer under her belt, shows us what it takes to deliver in You Are Not Alone, a gospel-based album of devotion, support and survival.
If raw blues-laced riffs are what you need, look no further than the gritty vocals in the rocking “Downward Road." Looking for something a little quieter? Check the soft title track, "You Are Not Alone," and "In Christ There is No East or West." All elements from Staples’s storied past are here, though fans will notice this release represents a significant new page in her career — it pairs her with producer Jeff Tweedy. Yes, that’s the same Tweedy who’s known as the bandleader of Wilco, and the collaboration works throughout, including the title track that he penned especially for Staples.
