The Martyr Index - Molotov Rocktail

Meter Records

With a title like Molotov Rocktail, it’s no surprise that the latest album by Calgary’s The Martyr Index is a bit cheesy. Using slicked-down riffs and pitchy vocals, the band spends most of its time delivering overwrought political messages with scud-missile subtlety. Ironically, when the band backseats the rock ’n’ roll theatrics in favour of low-key bang-and-twang, as on “Security,” the restraint works. The rest of the time, it’s all in-your-face message rock, and while the politics are admirable, they just get in the way of the music.
