Mark Sultan - $

Last Gang

King Khan might hear more hosannas — and fair enough, the man is a shaman — but his long-running, less flashy collaborator, Mark Sultan, deserves equal if not more cred. Whether as members of the Spaceshits, King Khan and BBQ Show or their recent congregation with the Black Lips as the Almighty Defenders, the dastardly duo has consistently tossed out top-shelf garage rock. Still, Sultan’s solo turns, spotlighting a tender, cigarette-burned croon, are arguably his most charming.

Following up 2007’s The Sultanic Verses, the Montreal mainstay is back with 13 more rockabilly-flirting rambles on $. Up-tempo stompers like “Go Berserk,” “Catastrophe” and the saxed-up “I’ll Be Loving You” will get the blood pumping, while the ballads “Ten of Hearts,” “Just to Hold You” and live staple “Nobody But You” — here stretched to six minutes plus — may just warm your filthy heart. Money in the bank!
