Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You

EMI

Only Lily Allen could sing about shit and roses in the same breath and come off sounding so sweet. Sheathed in electronic splendour, the U.K.’s princess of pot (belly and otherwise) has unleashed another sonic boogie machine on the world. While her 2006 debut Alright, Still won her the dubious honour of being compared to Amy Winehouse, It’s Not Me, It’s You distinguishes Lily Allen as an artist who enjoys a good time but is still capable of delivering the goods on time. In contrast to the intimidating opener, “Everyone’s at It,” the second track, “The Fear,” veritably skips through the streets of London, openly admiring itself in shop windows whilst flipping the pappies the bird. Listening to the capricious “22” and equally resolute “I Could Say,” it’s apparent that she’s forgiven herself for all her minor yet heavily tabloided indiscretions. Indeed, Allen’s outlook on life is pretty “fuckin’ fantastic,” as she puts it. The only drawback is the production — Allen’s vocals have been so over-processed that whether or not the girl can really sing is anybody’s guess.
