Liam Finn - I'll Be Lightning

Yep Roc

Even if you didn’t know that Liam Finn was the son of Aussie popster Neil Finn, you’d probably suspect something after hearing his solo long-player, I’ll Be Lightening. With oddball instrumentation balanced by classic Beatles-inspired arrangements, not to mention a more-than-familiar falsetto, Liam sounds like he is building an addition on the Crowded House legacy. He’s even clocking time as a member of that newly reformed group’s touring ensemble. That’s not to say he has completely fallen in line behind dear old dad, though. With moments that call to mind Michael Penn’s most melancholy work and a few songs that tip their hat to Elliot Smith, Finn Jr. proves he is capable of pretty, albeit sad, pop music. I’ll Be Lightening is beautiful, jangly and sincere, but it’s a bit too timid to be completely successful. It’s a fine start, though, and given time, this Finn will be a pop force to be reckoned with.
