The last time Kinski dropped a long-player, it was a ferocious bit of Sonic Youth-inspired noise rock. In the two-year interim, the Seattle four-piece has sludged up its sound and recorded the mammoth Down Below It’s Chaos. The mostly instrumental album is a stringbender’s wet dream, with intricate treble-kicked guitar work, druggy solos and volcanic fuzzed-out riffs that at times pay homage to Iggy and the Stooges. However, this is more than just a straight-up rocker. Off-kilter time signatures are laid under shimmering organ, stomp boxes are traded for delay pedals, offering refreshing amounts of texture. Even though the limited vocals still sound like Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, the end result is proof that you can mix space rock and stoner rock and get away with it.
