Kings of Convenience - Declaration of Dependence

Virgin

Norway’s Kings of Convenience is a discreet band in more ways than one. Aside from its unobtrusive but exceedingly pleasant brand of folk-pop, KoC keep an extremely low public profile. As proof, Declaration of Dependence is only the band’s third album in 10 years, and the band has a penchant for taking extended hiatuses and rarely touring.

That’s why fans of KoC sop up every ounce of new music that the band releases and Declaration should leave them more than satiated. The band hardly extends itself beyond past accomplishments, but its airy presence and pitch-perfect harmonies invite easy comparisons to Belle and Sebastian and Simon and Garfunkel. Despite minimal instrumentation, the songs are lush enough to have an almost visual impact, as if you can picture the imaginary film that Declaration is meant to score — particularly the brilliant “Mrs. Cold.” Kings of Convenience prove again to be as inconspicuous as a hummingbird, and equally mesmerizing.
