Nearly 10 years after her first release, Kathleen Edwards continues to blossom as a steadfast alt country singer-songwriter with her newest disc, Asking for Flowers. Though she hasn’t shied away from dark lyrics in the past, Edwards bares all in songs composed in the trenches of failed relationships. Packaging heartbreak and social issues with soulful yearning, Edwards fits her niche to a T. Her flawless and sometimes haunting vocals deliver the expected intricately constructed melodies, and while Edwards maintains her delicate and ladylike persona on these 11 tracks, she couples it with an assertive firmness. Still, while Edwards offers listeners compelling songwriting on this release, it comes across as more of the same, as she fails to deviate into new territory.
